How to Keep Your Pup Cool in Hot Weather

How to Keep Your Pup Cool in Hot Weather

We’ve been seeing heatwaves pop up all over the world lately and yes, even here in Ireland, the temperatures have been climbing! While it’s lovely to finally soak up some sunshine, it’s important to remember that our pups can feel the heat much more than we do. Dogs are more sensitive to rising temperatures and can easily overheat if we're not careful.

Whether you're planning a summer adventure or just chilling in the garden, here are our top tips to help keep your furry friend cool, comfortable, and safe during warm weather.

🌳 1. Walk Early or Late

Avoid the midday sun. Try to walk your dog early in the morning or after sunset when it’s cooler. Pavements can get dangerously hot and burn your pup’s paws - if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their feet!

💦 2. Hydration is Everything

Make sure your dog always has access to fresh, cool water - especially when you’re out and about. You can even pop a few ice cubes in their water bowl for an extra chill!

🍧 3. Treats That Cool

Frozen dog-safe treats like ice cubes with peanut butter, plain yogurt, or blended fruit can help keep your pup cool and entertained. You can even freeze broth or their favourite toys in ice trays for a fun, refreshing snack.

🧊 4. Cool Gear for Hot Days

Lightweight clothing like Cooling Tees or vests can help protect your dog’s skin from the sun while staying breathable and comfy. You can even dampen them with water to keep your pup extra cool on walks or in the garden.

🐕 5. Create a Chill Zone

Set up a shady area or a cooling mat in your home or garden where your dog can relax. Fans or air conditioning are also great if your pup is inside. Don’t forget - never leave dogs in a parked car, even for a minute.

🚿 6. Water Play = Happy Pup

Let your pup splash around in a paddling pool, sprinkler, or hose (if they enjoy it!). It’s a great way to cool down and burn some energy at the same time.

🚨 7. Know the Signs of Overheating

Keep an eye out for heavy panting, drooling, lethargy, or confusion - these can be signs of heatstroke. If you suspect your pup is overheating, move them to a cool place, offer water, and contact your vet immediately.

Stay Cool, Stay Stylish

Hot days don’t have to slow your pup down. With a few simple steps and a stylish cooling accessory, they’ll be ready for a safe and sunny adventure.
